We are a YWAM community that desires to live out biblical principles alongside the foundational values of YWAM. As such you are expected to set the example in right living and to familiarise yourself with the information in regards to living in our buildings and the guidelines drawn up in order to help life run more smoothly. This is irregardless of whether you live on campus or not (as living on campus is not an option for staff)- since the underlying value is to prefer one another, and the campus is the living space for our students and fellow YWAMers.
General Safety
Safety: We take the safety of our people and our buildings very seriously.
Gates & Campus Security: Please make sure the security gates are closed at all times. After closing the gate gently, please check that it is closed.
Memorise the code or put it into your cell phone. We don’t tell anyone the code for the gates. Don’t shout out the code to a friend in the street. If you see or hear this happening, please inform your school leader or let the Campus Life Manager know quickly. The gate codes will have to be changed immediately. Never leave the gate open for someone coming in from a distance behind you. Our security will lock all access gates at 11pm on weeknights and at midnight on weekends. If you plan to be away from campus until after these hours, you must alert the security person to unlock the door for you.
Do not allow strangers into the building. If a visitor arrives at the gate, please ask them to wait while you go and find the person they are coming to visit.
Moving Around the Campus: Please keep the following in mind in regards to your movement around the campus:
Don’t walk alone outside the campus during the day - walk in 2’s *
Don’t ever walk alone at night outside the campus. If you must go somewhere, go in a large group!!
Don’t carry valuables if it is not necessary. Only take items with you that you are willing to give away if someone were to ask you for them.
Don’t carry your credit cards, cash and laptops with you if it is not necessary.
Don’t walk and talk or message on your cell phone outside of the Campus. Locals know foreign YWAM-ers!
Be aware at ATM’s - don’t EVER accept help no matter what the person looks like.
Draw cash and go “shopping” at Checkers.
Don’t bring people you have just met onto the Campus.
Don’t give food to the homeless from our Campus. There are ministries that feed our homeless.
Please walk in groups of 3 or more to and from Community Meetings.
Ground Floor
Foyer: This is the “Face of the Building” where we welcome our guests to the building. This is the first impression they will have of our building when they walk in. Please let’s work together to keep this area respectable and not to leave any of your personal belongings lying around. If we find personal items, these will be stored in the Lost Property cupboard behind the swing door in the passage. All our wooden floors have been renovated, so please don’t bring bicycles through the building. All sports equipment must be stored in the Sports Equipment Cupboard on the back Porch of the Campus out of the way of everyone else. No skateboards / longboards / surfboards are allowed into the building or will be allowed to be stored in your bedrooms. In from the Back Porch, out from the Back Porch.
Furniture and Feet: In order to maximise the life of the furniture in the building and to keep it clean, we ask that you please don’t sit on the armrests, back of the chairs or put your feet on the chairs and tables. Dining
Room & Food: All meals must be eaten in the dining room, sun room, coffee shop or garden only. Please don’t take food to your bedrooms or in the classroom – it attracts mice, cockroaches and ants. The only some meals will be allowed in your bedroom is if you are ill. All meals must be eaten in their alloWed times (see mealtime schedule pg. 6). Please finish your meal 45 minutes after the first bell so that the cleaning teams can come into the dining room to clean. Please line-up for meals (behind the swing door) only when the bell has been rung. The bell will be rung again 20 minutes aVer the start of lunch and supper for second servings. Please do not hang around the kitchen until the second bell has been rung.
Please wash your own crockery and cutlery outside clean-up crew times. Once you have washed what you have used, please place the item in the correct blue dishwashing tray. Once a tray is full, it can be pushed through the sanitiser. Do not ever stack cups or overload the blue dishwashing trays.
No meal will be kept for you if you are not able to make it to the set meal times. The kitchen will only cater for life-threatening allergies after a doctor’s certificate has been handed to the Kitchen Manager. The Kitchen cannot cater to preferences, e.g. “I don’t like eggs, I don’t like tomatoes.” The Kitchen will not cater for intolerances to any food. It will be your responsibility to avoid eating those particular foods. If you are a vegetarian, please speak to the Kitchen Manager personally.
Personal snacks are allowed in your bedrooms, but they must be kept in an airtight container. If you want to take tea or coffee to your room, please use your own personal mug and not one from the general supply of the Base. Base mugs or any other base crockery are not allowed in the bedrooms.
No food is to be given out from the building. We are not a mercy ministry but a training campus. Although we would like to feed the poor and needy, we do not have enough for everyone who comes to the gate.
(You can rather tell them to go to Living Hope, a ministry to the poor and needy on main road near "False Bay College" opposite “Radio CCFM”)
Dining Room Fridges: The fridge with the white door is for leftover food from lunch & dinner and only for use of students and staff. The fridge with the glass doors is for use by students and staff who live on the campus. Both fridges will be cleaned once a week by a work duty student. Any items stored in the fridge must have your name clearly written with the date you purchased the item and stored in an airtight container. Any item that does not have your name and date on it or has expired will be thrown out. Please be considerate and not fill the fridge with many or large items, like 2 litre bottles. This fridge is actually a privilege. We cannot allow anyone to get sick from contaminated foods because food was not properly sealed or the fridge was overloaded.
Milk: Milk is only provided for tea, coffee and cereal. If you enjoy drinking a glass of milk from time to time you will need to buy your own.
Kitchen Guidelines: Every person who is working in the kitchen must wear an apron. Hair nets must be worn while preparing and serving food. The kitchen is not for personal use. Access to the kitchen is strictly limited to the Campus Life Team and the Prep work duty students. If a hospitality students needs to bake for a class celebration, please speak to the Kitchen Manager to make the necessary arrangements. All items for baking must be supplied by the school.
Lekker Brew Coffee Shop: If you have time available you can serve the base and gain great coffee based life skills by volunteering for a regular shift at the Lekker Brew. Its one of the best ways to get to know people as its at the heart of our Base.

Please book your time slot on the booking sheet attached to the machine. You will need to supply your own washing powder. There must be no washing or drying during the quiet hours. There is an iron and ironing board available in the Laundry Room as well.

Outside
Sun Room/Coffee Shop Furniture: The furniture in the sunroom/coffee shop belongs to the coffee shop, and will be overseen by coffee shop management team; if anything happens to the furniture please inform coffee shop management team or your school staff. Please don’t put your feet on the furniture or sit on the arm sides. Please don’t move the furniture around. Please do not play ball games in the garden or inside the building. Playing ball games breaks windows, sets off the electric fence and damages the wiring. All balls will be confiscated and donated to a ministry in Capricorn.
Swimwear: Please do not walk through the campus in your swimwear. Make sure you are completely dry before coming onto the campus. When you have been at the beach, please rinse your feet off at the outside tap which is in the ally at the leV side of the building, accessible via the back yard. If you have sandy shoes, please rinse them or make sure you brush off the sand as the beach harbours sand fleas.
Other Guidelines
Socialising: Hang out is to happen in common (public) areas, not in the bedrooms of the opposite sex or the hallways. No children under the age of 12 are allowed on the 1st floor, 2nd floor and ayc without one of their parents or caregiver present.
Laptops: If you have a laptop and/or phone you can be connected to our wireless network. No downloading/streaming/updating/playing of: toolbars, programs, videos, online games etc. Skype may be used a maximum of 2 hours per week. No watching of videos or listening to audio on the internet.
Internet Accountability: We believe our online conduct to be just as important and impacting our offline conduct. As such we ask that you abstain from illegal downloading, viewing pornography, participating in online gambling, or any unhealthy practices. If you struggle with any online behaviour, we are here to help you. We have resources to help if you struggle with any of these maWers, so please share with a staff member or your one-on-one if you are having any sort of history with them.
Doors and Windows: The wind blows VERY strongly for the majority of the year in Muizenberg, please close the doors gently, so that they keep out the draVs and don't bang, causing noise or damage. Ensure that windows are on the latch when opened.
Electricity: If you are the last person to leave a room please turn the lights off, helping to save energy. As we have at times had scheduled power cuts in South Africa due to shortages, saving electricity is especially important!
Water Use: Tap water in Cape Town is drinkable. We have had a serious drought in different parts of South Africa, including Cape Town. All the different regions are being supplied with water via dams. Currently Cape Town is allocated a use of 100 liters of water per day per person. We therefore ask to wisely use up water, which can be done via not letting the tap run unnecessarily, by taking 2 min. showers & not every day and not flushing toilets when it’s yellow.
First Aid Kit: Each school must have their own First Aid Kit and it is to be used in a emergency only. A general First Aid Kit is stored on the shelf above the cutlery in the short passage outside the kitchen. If you use an item from this kit, you are expected to replace what you used.
The Office: The office is located right next door to the campus. You will find Reception, Finance Office and Media Office as well as the Personnel Office there. Our Boardroom is also on the Office premises. Our office hours are from 8am until 4pm.
The post is collected every Monday and Thursday. School staff will come and collect student mail at the office on a regular basis.
Stationary: Campus Life Team does not supply or keep stock of stationary. Please make sure you have your own art supplies, like a pair of scissors, ruler or tape to do your journaling. They also don’t supply whiteboard markers or photostat paper. Your school will supply photostat paper for the printer in the study room. We ask that students and staff not take our Campus Life supplies from their office or the kitchen.
We trust that these guidelines will help you to navigate Base as easily as possible. Community life can be lots of fun and it can also be difficult and these guidelines will help to narrow the gap between these two challenges.
