  • South African Staff : bring a copy of your ID and skip to section below to get vehicle in your name

  • International Staff : The first thing that you will need to do is go to Traffic Services (the closest one to Muizenberg is in Fish Hoek) to apply for a Traffic Registration Number, as to be able to purchase a car, you will need one, and this process may take several weeks or months. Make sure to bring with you:

    • Form ELF1 (you can get this at Traffic Services office and fill out there)

    • Two passport pictures (download this app to take the photo for free and print at a local print shop)

    • Copy of passport (print a clear copy and get it certified at the local police station)

    • Copy of Visa (print a clear copy and get it certified at the local police station)

    • Proof of Residence - if the utility bill is not in your name, the owner of the bill must make an affidavit declaring that you live at the address and the utility bill must be attached to the affidavit. If you cannot get this from your landlord, or if you don’t have a long term residence, you can request this from our Personnel Department.

  • To get the vehicle in your name:

    • The seller will need to get a Roadworthy Certificate (they are responsible for this). It is possible to bribe the people that certify these things, so its worth getting the car checked by your own mechanic first so you aren’t taken advantage of.

    • Meet with the seller at Traffic services so you can submit the paperwork together (the closest one to Muizenberg is in Fish Hoek)

    • The seller should give you any receipts they have and any documents that relate to the car's warranty. Remember to document every step you take. It may be useful in the future to understand your rights as a seller and the Consumer Protection Act.

    • The seller should also give you the original copy of the Vehicle Registration Certificate

    • Fill in an Application for Registration of Motor Vehicle and Licencing of Motor Vehicle (RLV) forms

    • With the seller - make and sign a Proof of sale or vehicle sales agreement (this should be a receipt and/or an agreement of the transaction should be made, and it usually includes the paid amount, date, car's registration, make and model of the vehicle, VIN, etc.). This helps to protect you as the buyer.

    • Submit your application with the seller and pay any fees at Traffic Services

    • When you have the new title document, take it to the Roadworthy Center (the closest to Muizenberg is the Retreat Roadworthy Center), and they’ll make the new license plate for you. Bring some form of identification and the vehicle registration with you

    • Install the license plate to your car - if you don’t have a bracket that you can just snap it into, you can then take the plate to a car shop to get it screwed onto your car
