Many people use We Buy Cars to make the process super easy (note this is the option that will likely get your lowest return, where as if you sell the car privately and do all the paperwork yourself you can make more money back — there are pros and cons for each)

To sell privately, this is a process called a “Change of Owner or Title Holder Particulars for a Vehicle

Any changes to the particulars of the vehicle owner or title holder must be communicated to the appropriate registering authority within 21 days after such change.

  1. Get the car Roadworthied (the closest to Muizenberg is the Retreat Roadworthy Center): take your vehicle to a testing station with your Identity Document, vehicle registration, and a filled-in Application for Roadworthiness Certification.

  2. Coordinate with the buyer to meet at Traffic Services to submit the forms together

  3. Make a copy of the registration certificate for your records

  4. If you are a South African citizen, you must complete and submit form NCP only. If you are a foreign citizen, you must complete the NCP form and the Notice in respect of traffic register number (ANR) form.

  5. Give to the buyer the registration certificate, the Roadworthieness Certificate, spar keys and any receipts you have or documents that relate to the car's warranty. Remember to document every step you take.

  6. Complete the Notification of Change of Ownership (NCO) form.

  7. With the buyer - make and sign a Proof of sale or vehicle sales agreement (this should be a receipt and/or an agreement of the transaction should be made, and it usually includes the paid amount, date, car's registration, make and model of the vehicle, VIN, etc.). This helps to protect you as the seller

  8. Submit your application with the buyer and pay any fees at Traffic Services
