• Emphasize the “soft skills” employers are looking for: flexibility, teamwork, working with people in cross cultural settings effective communication etc. these are all things many of us learned in DTS. If you’ve just done a DTS you can classify this time under education and talk about the practicum side of DTS (outreach). There are many things to talk about, traveling overseas, working in different cultures/languages, team building, world understanding, leadership opportunities, public speaking, youth work, etc.

  • Employers generally love hearing that you’ve done volunteer work. Depending on what role you worked in on a YWAM Campus - Hospitality / Kitchen you can very easily translate to the service industry. If you were DTS staff it can be translated to a youth mentor, or DTS leader can translate to youth pastor.

  • I would sometimes list community development or youth worker, but it depends upon the type of work that you were involved in during your time and what kind of job you are looking for. Honestly when i was looking for work i would tailor and adjust my resume slightly when it came to YWAM based on what work i was applying for and what skills i could pull out from my time in YWAM.

  • literally done everything on a campus from maintenance, recruitment, office management, kitchen - so just looking up what those job titles would be within the spheres and the major duties we were responsible for and communicating it in a way that an HR dept would understand and value.

  • you speak three languages, are an amazing leader in cross cultural and chaotic environments, communicate really well to people both under you (without being proud) and above you (while being respected), have a charisma and ease of relatability which makes people comfortable and trusting around you, and have a lot of experience traveling without being tied down in one place.

  •  I did my DTS right before college, and found that my outreach experience especially has been very valuable. For context, I work in non-profit fundraising (development), and my work experience is related to alleviating consequences of poverty and trauma. I think good resume writing is a lot about being able to see connections and similarities in the work you’ve done, in whatever formal or informal context.

  • My ability to thrive in a context of constant change allows me to be flexible and not freak out when schedules are changing every week - necessary for this job.

  • I def think that my global worldview, ability to speak multiple languages, and navigate a variety of cultures is a huge asset to my current job as mentor coordinator for an organization that serves refugee youth

  • For example, leader of DTS does not translate well. It is a low position in the working world. Director or manager could be a better translation, if that makes sense.

For example—a secular approach to some specific work skills—in YWAM, I taught English to at-risk children and youth (ie they have experienced poverty or trauma), I helped create and publish regular newsletters that communicate philanthropic vision and strategy, I worked interculturally in a team of people from X cultures, etc.

  • An example:

Today I‘m in the Financial Management of a Health Science Company and I wrote this:

    International Experience:
University of the Nations, Kona/USA: Modular studies „Master of Christian Ministries“:
    > Bilingual course (Korean-English) for creativity and music in christian churches
    > International basic course (12 nations in class!) each including an international outreach in teams:
    > YWAM Thailand, Bangkok: Training of church leaders national wide
    > Mother’s Choice, Hong Kong: Caring for mentally disabled kids in the nursery

Just be careful that there is a positive business buzz word between every true word 😉: International, teams, xx nations, master of, modular, creativity, ...

experience one can think that a job in Travel / Tourism and Hospitality field could be an possible job option.
